The power of music

Posted: November 14, 2015 in Black Dog

I’m not sure whether it is because I was brought up with music, but I find it can have a profound effect on me. I have a ‘Happy Playlist’ on my iPod to help me when I’m feeling low. Tonight I heard a piece of music that unexpectedly brought a tear to my eye.

Charlie Chaplin was not only a comedy film actor, but a musician. He wrote some music for his movie “Modern Times” to which John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons later added lyrics, and it has been recorded by Nat King Cole, Michael Jackson and Josh Groban, among others.

As well as a beautiful melody, I think the words are poignant too.

Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though it’s breaking.
When there are clouds in the sky
you’ll get by.

If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll see the sun come shining through
For you.

Light up your face with gladness,
Hide every trace of sadness.
Although a tear may be ever so near

That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying.
You’ll find that life is still worth-while
If you just smile.
